AI Voice, Real Tears: The $36M Taiwan Scam That Tricked 20,000 Uncles Into Buying “Fish Oil”

Grab your Kopi-O Gao, take a seat, and clear your afternoon schedule because Uncle has the absolute ultimate break-down of the most wild, high-tech, and downright insane love scam story to ever come out of Taiwan.

We’ve all heard of standard internet love scams, right? Usually, it’s just some random catfish using stolen photos, chatting via WhatsApp, and begging for a $100 Google Play gift card. But this case? *Wahlau eh*, this Taiwan operation takes the whole entire cake. A husband-and-wife ringleader team—38-year-old Huang Chien-hao and his 31-year-old wife Hsu Hsiang-chi—didn’t just steal money; they built a corporate scam syndicate that defrauded over 20,000 victims out of a jaw-dropping S$36 million (NT$900 million) between 2022 and 2024.

How did they do it? Through corporate sales funnels, high-tech AI voice clones, brutal internal torture, and an army of fake online sweethearts. Grab your tissue box and your calculator, because here is the deep-dive into how this criminal empire operated!

Phase 1: The Four-Department Corporate Assembly Line

This wasn’t an amateur group of guys sitting in an internet cafe. Huang and Hsu ran their operation like a multi-national corporation divided into four specialized departments:

  1. The Lead Generation Team (“List Team”): Their entire job was setting up thousands of fake profiles across dating apps (Tinder, Omi, Bumble) using photos stolen from real internet influencers and models.
  2. The New Customer Team: Once a victim swiped right, this team took over the chat, building immediate rapport.
  3. The Cultivation Team: The “relationship builders.” Their goal was to deepen the emotional bond over weeks and months, turning casual chats into full-blown romantic dependencies.
  4. The Returning Customer Team (The Squeezers): Once the victim was totally brainwashed, this elite team stepped in to extract maximum cash under the guise of major life crises.

Phase 2: The “Transformers” Voice-Changer & The IT Genius

You think you’re having a late-night romantic phone call with a 21-year-old Taiwanese chio bu named “Angel” who sounds softer than condensed milk. But in reality, on the other end of the line sits a 40-year-old greasy dude named Ah Beng, wearing a holey singlet and boxers while eating a $5 bento box.

How did they pull off this magic trick without the victim suspecting a thing? Technology, lor!

The syndicate hired a full-time software engineer (surnamed Chung) and paid him big bucks to develop a custom AI deepfake voice-changing software. The engineer gathered 22 real female employees working in the syndicate’s “Public Relations” team, recorded thousands of hours of their natural voices, and trained an AI voiceprint model.

The software was so advanced that male scammers—and even older female operatives with low, raspy voices—could type out a script or speak directly into a headset microphone. The AI instantly transformed their voice in real-time into a sweet, high-pitched, heavenly tone: “Aiya bao bao, I miss you so much today… have you eaten yet?”

The moment those lonely uncles and gullible simps heard that voice through their earphones, their logical brains went 100% dead, their hearts melted into soup, and their wallets opened wide wide!

Phase 3: The 5-Stage “Pig Butchering” Funnel

This wasn’t a hit-and-run operation where they asked for thousands on Day 1. The group ran a cold, calculated sales pipeline designed to slowly fatten up the “pigs” (the victims) before slaughtering their bank accounts in five meticulous stages:

  • Stage 1: The Low-Cost “Fish Oil” Pity PlayOnce chatting began, the fake girlfriend started playing the pity card. “Ah Boy ah, my monthly sales quota at my wellness company short of $50 only, my boss going to fire me… can you buy my fish oil, Antrodia cinnamomea (medicinal fungus), or power bank to help me pass my probation?” The purchase was small (around NT$1,000 to NT$2,000 / S$40 to S$80), so almost every guy happily transferred the cash to look like a hero.
  • Stage 4: High-SES Upgrades & Physical Escort DatesOnce the victim proved he was responsive, the fake girlfriend asked for high-end electronics—Dyson hair dryers, brand-new iPhones, and air purifiers. If a high-spending victim started getting suspicious and demanded to meet in person, the syndicate sent real, attractive female “escorts” from their PR team to meet them! These paid girls went on real dates, held hands, and sometimes even engaged in physical intimacy—collecting cash, phones, and luxury gifts directly from the victim before returning the loot to the syndicate. This gave the victim a massive hit of fake hope, keeping him hooked for another six months!
  • Stage 5: The Grand Finale SlaughterOnce the emotional bond was sealed tight, the heavy sob stories came out: emergency hospital bills for sick grandmas, fake plastic surgery debts, or sudden legal fines. The most absurd excuse uncovered by police? Scammers asked victims to send tens of thousands of dollars to fund “bridal makeup, tattooing, and eyelash extension courses” run by associate businesses, promising: “I’m taking these classes so I can look super pretty when you and I get married next year!”

Phase 4: Toxic MNC Culture With Horrific HR “KPIs”

Behind the scenes, the husband-and-wife ringleaders installed a custom internal performance management software called the “iAssistant” system. Every single scammer had to log into the system daily to track their sales quotas, number of active victims, and money extracted.

  • If you hit your monthly targets: You were treated like royalty, receiving fat cash commissions and performance bonuses.
  • If you missed your targets: Habis liao.

The internal punishment system was pure nightmare fuel. According to court documents released by Taipei prosecutors, underperforming scammers and members who tried to quit or leak secrets were subjected to horrific torture:

  • Being repeatedly electrocuted with high-voltage electric fly swatters
  • Severe physical beatings and lockups
  • Coerced sexual acts and forced sodomy using foreign objects as “disciplinary measures”

Phase 5: Supercars, Rolexes, and the Final Raid

While thousands of victims were taking out bank loans, draining their life savings, and falling deep into debt, Huang and his wife Hsu were living like royalty. Hsu flexed her wealth on social media, calling herself “Princess” and posting photos of her lavish lifestyle. The couple amassed a fleet of Ferraris, McLarens, and Porsche supercars, a personal collection of 47 luxury watches (Rolex and Audemars Piguet), Hermes bags, and NT$300 million worth of real estate.

Police finally executed a synchronized raid on the syndicate’s call centres and luxury mansions.

The final count:

  • 57 syndicate members indicted on charges under the Fraud Crime Hazard Prevention Act and Money Laundering Control Act.
  • Seized over $12 million worth of assets, including supercars, real estate deeds, and luxury goods.
  • Confiscated 67 computers packed with the AI voice-cloning software and “iAssistant” tracking data.

Taipei prosecutors are asking the court to pass maximum sentences without mercy: at least 25 years in prison for the husband (Huang), and 18 years for his “Princess” wife (Hsu).

☕ The Final Kopi-Tiam Moral

Technology is moving way too fast, and scammers are getting way too smart!

Next time you are on a dating app and a drop-dead gorgeous girl matches with you, sends you a sweet-sounding voice message, and within two days begs you to buy her $50 worth of “fish oil” or sponsor her eyelash extension course… BLOCK IMMEDIATELY!

Don’t be a simp, don’t dream of free lunch, and definitely don’t send your hard-earned savings to a “chio bu” who might actually be a guy in his underwear using AI voice filters. Take your money, go down to your nearest hawker centre, buy yourself a nice $1.50 Kopi-O Gao, and stay safe out there!
