Aiyoh, some people spend years mugging through medical school, surviving endless anatomy exams, and pulling overnight graveyard shifts, only to put their whole career on the line over absolute blur sotong behavior.
You work so hard to earn that white coat and prestigious stethoscope, but when common sense goes out the window, even the highest qualification in the world cannot save you.
Case in point: a 29-year-old former Khoo Teck Puat Hospital (KTPH) doctor, Yeo Teng Yao, is currently facing serious legal heat after being charged in court over an alleged incident that took place right inside a hospital ward.
The Stethoscope Allegation at KTPH
According to court documents, back in July 2023, Yeo was attending to a 24-year-old female patient. But instead of conducting a standard medical consultation, he allegedly used the flat side of his stethoscope inappropriately on her chest area.
When the allegation came to light, the authorities didn’t take it lightly at all. MOH Holdings stepped in immediately to suspend him from duty, and following internal reviews, officially gave him the boot. The police subsequently conducted investigations and hauled him straight to court, charging him with outrage of modesty under Section 354 of the Penal Code.
What the Law Says and the Potential Penalties
Under Singapore law, it is important to remember that anyone charged in court is strictly presumed innocent until proven guilty by a judge.
However, if he is eventually convicted, Section 354 carries heavy penalties—he could be looking at up to 3 years in jail, a fine, caning, or a combo package of these punishments. Imagine spending your youth hitting the textbooks, only to face a potential long stint behind bars!
Not the First Time: Other Healthcare Cases in Singapore
Sadly, this case isn’t the only time local healthcare practitioners have made headlines over serious legal trouble and breach of professional trust:
- January 2026 (The Sedated Patient Case): A 76-year-old doctor was handed a one-week jail sentence after being convicted of molesting a 20-year-old patient who was still drowsy after a colonoscopy. The court found that there was zero medical reason to perform a “breast examination” on someone treated for bleeding piles. Thankfully, two eagle-eyed nurses spotted the inappropriate behavior in the procedure room and reported him straightaway.
- August 2025 (The Yishun TCM Case): A 74-year-old Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioner operating Sing Wah Medical Hall in Yishun Ring Road was hit with three counts of outrage of modesty over allegations of inappropriate touching and abusing physical contact during treatments.
- Prior GP Assault Case: In another severe incident, a general practitioner received a heavy 10-year jail sentence after being convicted of abusing his authority during a late-night consultation to sexually assault a patient who had come in seeking basic medical help.
Public Trust and Legal Accountability
At the end of the day, medical professionals hold an immense level of trust in Singapore society. Patients go to hospitals and clinics feeling vulnerable, trusting that the person in the white coat is there to heal them, not take advantage.
When line-crossing allegations come up, the legal system moves fast to ensure proper accountability—because no matter how many degrees or titles you have behind your name, nobody gets a free pass in court!
