Wah, kaki, grab your steaming cup of kopi-O kosong and settle down because it’s story time, and you already know the location check: Yishun.

Where else can a relationship drama scale up to a full-blown horror movie plot twist?

Let’s take a nostalgic, slightly traumatised trip back to September 2008, when standard neighborhood gossip got completely upstaged by a case so siao-gajet it sounds like a rejected script from Crimewatch: Extreme Edition.### Part 1: The Red-Flag Romance Built on Body Fluids and Chili Crab
Our main character—or rather, the main blur sotong of the disaster—was a 42-year-old uncle named Wang Zhijian.

Back in 1996, Wang met a woman named Zhang Meng at a port in Tianjin, China. Fast forward a few years, they started dating, and Madam Zhang dropped a major plot twist: she was actually married with a kid.

Did Wang run away? Nope. He decided to stay, and to prove her everlasting love, Madam Zhang allegedly pricked her finger with a needle to write “I love Wang Zhi…” in her own blood before giving up because it pain hor.

Wang, not wanting to lose the romantic competition, finished the sentence with “…jian, I want to marry him” using his own blood, and even tattooed her face and a rose on his back. KNN, confirm red flag size large nation-flag style.

After Madam Zhang finally chose Wang over her husband, her family reportedly beat Wang up and caused a ruckus at his workplace, forcing him to retire early on medical grounds in April 2007.Wang then spent a jaw-dropping 100,000 yuan of his pension in just three and a half months bankrolling her branded clothes and expensive seafood meals.

Part 2: Relocating the Drama to Yishun Avenue 11

By late 2007, Madam Zhang moved to Singapore as a peidu mama (study mama) to support her 17-year-old daughter, Jianyu, who was busy acing her classes at Northview Secondary School.

They rented a sixth-floor corner unit at Block 349 Yishun Avenue 11. To help cover costs, they sublet a room to another mother-daughter duo from China: Ms Yang Jie and her 14-year-old daughter, Li Meilin.

Things were supposedly peaceful until Wang made his fateful trips to Singapore in 2008. Wang claimed that during his stays, he was treated like an absolute helper—he had to stay naked in the bedroom, defecate into plastic bags, and cook while his lover’s daughter treated him coldly like a total homewrecker.

On his final trip, after burning through S$1,400 in days and getting scolded over a denied crab dinner request on 18 September, Wang completely snapped.

Part 3: The Bloody Rampage & The Yishun Special Plunge

That night, running on a toxic mix of rage and perceived disrespect, Wang grabbed a serrated kitchen knife and relentlessly hacked at Madam Zhang until she stopped moving.

When 17-year-old Jianyu woke up and rushed out, Wang didn’t even blink—he slashed her too. Between the mother and daughter, they suffered a horrifying 93 slash and stab wounds.

Hearing the commotion, the second pair in the house—Ms Yang and 15-year-old Meilin—locked themselves in, but Wang violently barged in.

In a desperate bid for survival, Ms Yang scrambled out of the kitchen window onto a narrow ledge holding onto laundry pole brackets. Showing zero chill, Wang allegedly chopped her fingers, sending her plummeting six storeys down to her tragic death on the ground floor.

Part 4: The Ultimate Plot Armor and Courtroom Karma

Wang then turned his attention to young Meilin, slashing her multiple times and leaving her for dead in the toilet.

Lying in a pool of agony, the brave 15-year-old whispered a heartbreaking prayer: “God, let me die.” Hearing her, the cold-blooded killer came back for a second round of stabbing.

Yet, by an absolute medical miracle, Meilin survived the carnage, suffering horrific injuries including a slashed face and a nearly severed ear.

When the police finally forced their way into the flat at 2am on 19 September 2008, they found a bloody scene of absolute devastation—and Wang, who had the audacity to flash a massive, grinning smile at reporters and cameras outside the court.

During the trial, Wang tried to play the “diminished responsibility” blur sotong card, claiming an adjustment disorder made him black out. But hor, his defense plan completely crumbled when the ultimate survivor, Meilin, walked straight into the courtroom to testify against him.

The judge saw right through the nonsense, ruling that Wang was entirely lucid when he picked his weapons, hacked at victims, and even chopped fingers to force a fall. The court sentenced him to hang at Changi Prison.

The Moral of the Story?
Don’t anyhow write love notes using your own bodily fluids, don’t throw tantrums over chili crab, and confirm plus chop: never underestimate the sheer plot armor of a survivor seeking justice. Stay safe out there, folks!
