Imagine this: You’re cruising out of your HDB carpark on a bright morning, feeling like a boss in your $230,000 Mercedes-Benz EV. Suddenly, you smell something… burnt. Not your neighbor’s chao ta bee hoon, but a burning smell coming right out of your own center console.
Next thing you know—POP! POP! BOOM!—your luxury ride turns into a full-blown Hollywood action movie scene.

That’s exactly what happened to one suay driver outside Blk 548 Woodlands Drive 44 (near Vista Point) when her EV decided to spontaneously turn itself into a BBQ pit.
What Happened at Woodlands? (The Drama)
The poor female driver, who had owned the German luxury EV for under three years, was just trying to leave the carpark when her car started emitting a very suspicious odor inside the cabin.
- Where Smoke, There Fire: Smoke started gushing out right from the middle area between the driver and front passenger seats—basically sitting directly on top of where the giant lithium-ion battery pack lives.
- Heroic Attempt Failed: The driver and some brave nearby security guards immediately whipped out small portable fire extinguishers like action heroes. But guess what? Lithium-ion fires don’t care about your tiny extinguisher. The flames just laughed and got bigger.
- “POP! POP!” Time to Siam! As ominous popping and mini-explosion noises started echoing from the undercarriage, everyone wisely decided, “Nope, my life is worth more than this car,” and siammed (ran away) to a safe distance.
- SCDF to the Rescue: SCDF arrived quickly and blasted the car with continuous streams of water to put out the inferno.
The Good News: Heng ah! Zero injuries reported. The Bad News: The $230k Mercedes interior was left completely charred, melted, and essentially turned into scrap metal. SCDF is currently investigating the exact cause.
The Big Question: Why Do EV Batteries Catches Fire and Explode? 🧪
With so many Singaporeans switching to EVs nowadays (thanks, COE prices!), everyone is asking: Why do EV fires look like a Michael Bay movie effect?
Unlike traditional petrol cars that just burn liquid fuel, EVs carry a giant “chemical bomb” under the floorboards—a massive Lithium-Ion Battery pack filled with hundreds of tiny, high-energy battery cells packed tightly together.
1. The Villain: “Thermal Runaway” (Dominos of Doom)
The number one culprit behind EV infernos is a nasty chemical reaction called Thermal Runaway.
Think of it like a row of falling dominoes, but with fire:
- One single cell gets angry (due to damage, internal short circuit, or manufacturing flaw) and starts overheating.
- Once it hits about 80°C to 100°C, it breaks down internally and starts releasing its own extreme heat and oxygen.
- That cell then cooks its neighbor, which cooks its neighbor, creating a runaway chain reaction that burns through the entire battery pack!
2. Why the Loud “POP” and Explosion Noises?
As thermal runaway happens, the liquid chemical inside the battery turns into flammable gas. Because the battery is sealed tight inside a heavy metal armor case under the floor, all that trapped gas builds up insane pressure.
When the metal casing finally gives up and ruptures… BOOM! You get a dramatic high-pressure jet of flame accompanied by loud popping sounds.

3. Oxygen Generator: Why Water Extinguishers Are Useless
Normally, a fire needs air (oxygen) to burn. Cover it with a blanket or powder extinguisher, and it dies.
Plot twist with Lithium batteries: When they burn, the internal chemical reaction creates its own oxygen from within! That’s right, the battery literally feeds its own fire. It can burn underwater, in space, or through your tiny car extinguisher. That’s why SCDF needs tons of water—not just to smother the fire, but to cool down the chemical reaction inside!
What Usually Triggers an EV Fire?
To be fair to EVs, global statistics show that petrol cars catch fire way more often than EVs. But when an EV goes off, it goes off with style. Common triggers include:
- Factory Flaws: A microscopic speck of metal accidentally trapped inside a cell during manufacturing can short-circuit the whole system out of nowhere.
- Underbody Scraping: Hitting a severe pothole or scraping hard against a high kerb/hump can dent the protective plate underneath and crush a cell.
- BMS Failure: If the computer managing the charging (Battery Management System) falls asleep at the job, fast-charging can overcook the cells.
💡 What to Do If Your EV Smells Like Roasted Rubber?
- Don’t try to be a hero: Pull over and switch off the car immediately. Don’t try to drive to the nearest workshop to “save money on towing”.
- Evacuate instantly: Get everyone out and stand at least 15 to 20 metres away.
- Don’t breathe the smoke: That white/grey gas venting from the battery contains nasty chemicals like hydrogen fluoride. Walk upwind!
- Call 995: Tell SCDF specifically: “It’s an Electric Vehicle!” so they bring the big water guns.
- Let it go: If the battery under the floor starts popping, leave your bag and wallet inside and back away. Your life is worth more than a leather bag!
