As parents in Singapore, handing our precious little ones over to preschool so we can go to work requires immense trust. We expect them to be safe, loved, and guided. But when that trust is broken—when teachers treat toddlers like punching bags—the trauma shatters an entire family’s peace.
Here are the shocking stories of what some of our toddlers have endured, and how one little boy went from deeply traumatized to regaining his spark.

Action Movie Abuse: The Teacher Who “Nudged” a 3-Year-Old
Just recently, a 31-year-old former preschool teacher was handed a 5-month jail sentence for treating a 3-year-old toddler like a wrestling opponent in September 2025. While court gag orders protect the identity of the school and child, the details of what she did are downright outrageous.
The poor 3-year-old boy was crying outside his classroom. Instead of soothing him like a proper educator, this woman dragged him inside by his wrists and flung him onto the floor.
When the fiery little guy smacked her thigh back, the adult didn’t de-escalate—she slapped his arm back! Hearing noise outside, she quickly closed the classroom door, scolded him, and slapped his face twice so hard that his head banged straight into a cupboard.
She even threatened the terrified boy, telling him, “Don’t tell your parents, ah!”
Luckily, the school principal witnessed the incident, rescued the child, and notified his mother, who immediately lodged a police report. The most infuriating part? When the police showed the teacher clear-as-day CCTV footage, she actually tried to bluff, claiming she didn’t slap him—she just “nudged the side of his head.”
Wah lau, nudge until his head hits a cupboard? Who is she trying to fool? While the prosecutor pushed for 8 months jail, stating parents trust teachers to care for kids rather than use them as punchbags, the judge ultimately sentenced her to 5 months.
Adam’s Story: From Bubbly Toddler to Terrified Shell
Sadly, this isn’t an isolated case. Take the heartbreaking story of Natasha and her 18-month-old boy, Adam.
Before enrolling in preschool in 2024, Adam was a bubbly, happy-go-lucky toddler. He was the kind of kid who loved helping around the house—happily mopping the floor, helping with laundry, and flashing big, bright smiles at strangers like a friendly little boss.
Then came childcare, and almost immediately, his parents noticed a horrifying shift:
- Night Terrors: Adam woke up screaming uncontrollably every night between 1 AM and 3 AM.
- Extreme Fear: He developed an intense panic surrounding his school uniform and refused to take baths.
- Slurred Speech: His normal speech development suddenly regressed.
- Unexplained Injuries: He repeatedly came home with random bruises. The school served up standard excuses: “Oh, he fell off a chair lah,” or “A friend accidentally pushed him.”
The breaking point arrived when Adam came home with severe, deep fingernail marks across his back. Refusing to accept more vague excuses, his parents wrote directly to HQ.
When the CCTV footage was finally reviewed, the truth was revealed: a teacher had been force-feeding and violently shaking the helpless toddler. Although the teacher was fired immediately and Adam was pulled out, the trauma didn’t just vanish. For four months, the poor boy remained terrified of the world.

A Troubling Pattern Across Singapore
These cases join a string of high-profile preschool mistreatment incidents across Singapore in recent years:
- Woodlands & Choa Chu Kang Center Cases: Viral CCTV footage previously exposed preschool teachers rough-handling toddlers, hitting them with books, forcing them to drink water while lying flat, and shouting aggressively—sparking widespread public outrage and stricter enforcement from the Early Childhood Development Agency (ECDA).
- Preschool Educator Charged Over Slapping and Pulling Toddlers (March 2026): A 58-year-old woman was charged in court on March 13, 2026, under the Children and Young Persons Act with two counts of ill-treating children under her care at a preschool. Court documents revealed she allegedly slapped a 5-year-old girl’s head twice and, just days later, forcefully pulled a 4-year-old boy by his arms during classroom hours.
- Former Preschool Teacher Convicted of Rough-Handling 2-Year-Old (October 2025): Former preschool teacher Wu Jiaying was convicted in October 2025 for ill-treating a 2-year-old girl. During trial, Wu claimed she was only trying to “calm the child down” due to workload stress and a lack of special needs training. However, CCTV footage clearly showed her forcefully slamming the girl onto the floor and a chair, pulling her across the classroom by her arm, and shaking her violently.
- Preschool Fined & Management Charged Over Cover-Up (October 2025): In late October 2025, details emerged regarding a preschool where a former staff member molested three toddlers during naptime. Beyond convicting the perpetrator, the Early Childhood Development Agency (ECDA) fined the preschool S$26,200, shortened its operating license to six months, and restricted new enrollments. Additionally, police charged four members of the school management for intentionally omitting information, attempting to cover up the incident, and tampering with evidence.
Finding the “Real Medicine”: Adam’s Journey to Healing
For Adam, light at the end of the tunnel came unexpectedly. While walking through an Eastside shopping mall one day, Adam froze outside a Taekwondo studio, mesmerized by the older kids kicking, shouting, and moving with confidence.
Natasha began reaching out to martial arts schools, but almost all rejected Adam because he wasn’t even 3 years old yet. Finally, one super steady head coach gave him a chance.
The coach didn’t rush Adam or treat him like he was broken:
- He celebrated every tiny win, no matter how small.
- He handed out stickers and non-stop encouragement.
- He built a safe, predictable environment where Adam could rebuild his confidence at his own pace.
Slowly but surely, the magic worked. Adam went from being scared of his own shadow to clearing hurdles, practicing his poomsae moves at home, and proudly earning his yellow-tip belt!
The Takeaway for Every Parent
While Taekwondo provided the outlet, Adam’s mom pointed out something far deeper: the real medicine was having patient adults who believed in the kid instead of seeing him as a broken toy.
Send your child to preschool to learn ABCs, not to train for the UFC! Keep these crucial lessons in mind:
- Never Accept “Nudge” Excuses: If your child comes home with unexplained injuries or drastic behavioral shifts (night terrors, bath anxiety, speech changes), don’t let anyone convince you “it’s just a phase.”
- Demand CCTV Access: As the court cases show, abusive staff will lie to your face until the camera footage comes out. Escalate directly to management or police if you suspect foul play.
- Patience Heals Trauma: If the worst happens, traumatized children need time, routine, and encouraging mentors who help them rebuild their trust step by step.
Today, little Adam has his spark back. He’s back to happily mopping the floor, saying hello to neighbors, and living his best life as a confident little martial artist! Stay vigilant, trust your instincts, and protect our little ones!
