Wah lau eh, drink your Kopi O Gao first and listen to this absurd story.
Singapore football fans are currently sibei peh chek because tickets for the upcoming ASEAN Hyundai Cup 2026 Semi-Finals between Singapore and Thailand disappeared faster than a reserved table’s tissue packet during peak lunch hour. Genuine fans who wanted to cheer for the Lions got left high and dry, while scalpers jumped in like hungry ghosts, immediately listing a single pair of tickets on reselling sites for a mind-boggling $1,500!
Originally priced at just $35 (Cat 2) to $49 (Cat 1), scalpers marked these tickets up by an insane 15x to 30x. Even Lions defender Irfan Fandi took to social media to call out the absurdity, posting: “This shouldn’t be happening. #SayNoToScalpers.”
Why Is the Supply So Small Anyhow?
If you’re wondering why tickets vanished in under two minutes, blame the calendar.
- The NDP Hangover: The 55,000-seat National Stadium was unavailable due to ongoing National Day Parade (NDP) teardown and venue logistics.
- Squeezed into Jalan Besar: The match had to be pushed to the much smaller, 6,000-capacity Jalan Besar Stadium—leaving only about 4,000 home tickets for the entire nation.
- The Ticketing Nightmare: Buying on the platform was like playing a high-stakes game of “whack-a-mole.” Available green seats lit up on screen and vanished within a microsecond before normal humans could even click!
A Short History of Singaporeans Getting Robbed by Scalpers
This isn’t even the first time local buyers have been treated like walking ATMs. Scalping in Singapore has reached legendary levels over the years:
- The Great Taylor Swift Heist: When the Eras Tour hit our shores, scalpers were flipping $300 VIP tickets for up to $10,000. People were unironically offering to trade their kidney or their BTO queue number just to see TayTay.
- The Coldplay Marathon: Cold-hearted resellers bought up tickets in bulk and jacked up prices by 500%, leaving actual fans crying while staring at the dreaded “You are behind 300,000 people” queue screen.
- McDonald’s Hello Kitty & Pokémon Cards: Remember people fighting at 4 AM outside McDonald’s for plastic Hello Kitty toys and Pokémon card sets? Those $5 Happy Meal toys ended up on Carousell for $200 before the sun even came up.
How to Enjoy the Match Without Selling a Kidney
Unless that $1,500 ticket includes a personal massage from the coach and guaranteed gold medals for everyone on the pitch, save your hard-earned cash. For that kind of money, you could fly business class to Bangkok, stay in a five-star hotel, eat Tom Yum until your tongue turns blue, and still have enough spare change left over.
The best move? Don’t buy from scalpers. Let them eat the tickets for dinner. You can catch the game for free on meWATCH, or head down to live community screenings at Bishan CC, Our Tampines Hub, and One Punggol to cheer with real fans over a $1.80 iced tea!
