Drink Driving in Singapore: Dangerous, Crazy Penalties, and Why You Confirm Plus Chop Should Never Do It!

Every day also got people say: “Drink already, don’t drive lah!” But some drivers still like to act hero, drink until blurred-blurred then go and drive, end up causing super tragic accidents. Once you drink and take the steering wheel, your car basically becomes a deadly weapon on the road!

1. The Horror Dunearn Road Accident: Really Power Tragic

Recently in the High Court, details came out again about one super violent drink-driving case that happened on Dunearn Road.

Got one 46-year-old Australian PR guy, went to party drink red wine and white wine. After that, he drove his silver BMW M3 Coupe, but inside the back seat actually got his two tiny kids (aged 3 and 4)! On top of that, he was super sleep-deprived from taking care of baby the night before, plus he took drowsiness medicine earlier.

He drove like F1 racer, speeding between 111 km/h and 122 km/h at a 70 km/h zone. Because so drunk and fast, he never see a 64-year-old Singaporean uncle crossing the road and just direct smash into him without braking!

The impact was so bloody terrifying that the poor uncle’s body got cut into three parts, and the body parts crashed through the windscreen inside the car! The glass shattered and even injured the driver’s own kids in the back.

The Court Sentence & Appeal Drama

  • Original Court Sentence: 11 years jail, $12,000 fine, and 15 years driving ban after he comes out.
  • The Driver Ask For Discount: His lawyer say he very remorseful, paid 5-figure money to victim’s family, and want to go back care for kids, so ask judge to lower to 6 to 8 years jail.
  • The Prosecutor Say No Way: Prosecutors push back hard, say his action super selfish and dangerous to public and his own kids, plus he got previous 2015 drink driving record before! So ask judge to increase jail to 12 years and 9 months instead!

2. Other Crazy Drink Driving Cases in Singapore

Singapore court really no mercy for drink drivers one, whether got people die or not.

Case A: The Tuas Checkpoint High-Speed Crash

Got one 44-year-old businessman went on a 7-hour drinking session, Whack beer and whiskey like water. He wanted to drive home to Yishun, but drunk until blur, ended up driving towards Tuas at 134 km/h! He smashed into Tuas Checkpoint at over 100 km/h, lost control, and hit a 30-year-old Cisco officer who was trying to hide behind a safety bollard. The poor officer suffered massive brain injury, face shattered, and now stuck in a permanent vegetative state requiring 24/7 care.

  • Sentence: High Court judge increased his sentence to 5 years jail, $10,000 fine, and 10 years driving ban!

Case B: The Director Who Crashed Near Supreme Court

One company director drank 4 to 5 cans of beer, drive off less than 1 hour later. Ended up lost control near Supreme Court, mounting the pavement and almost uprooting a traffic signal post.

  • Sentence: 2 weeks jail, $7,000 fine, and 42 months (3.5 years) driving ban.

Case C: The Yishun Park Connector Driver

3. New Traffic Laws: Alcohol Limit Slash More Than Half, Demerit Points Tightened!

Government now super serious about catching drink drivers and road endangerment. They passed new strict rules:

  • Legal Alcohol Limits Slashed:
    • Breath Limit: Lowered from 35mcg per 100ml breath down to 15mcg only! (Drink one sip of beer also might exceed already!)
    • Blood Limit: Lowered from 80mg per 100ml blood down to 30mg!
  • First-Time Offender Also Can Go Jail: If your alcohol level super high, even if first time kena, judge recommended to send you straight to jail, no more just fine-and-go!
  • Instant Handheld Tester: Traffic Police now carry power portable breathalysers—can test you on the spot and use as official court evidence straight away!
  • Demerit Points Reduced to 18: Previously you need to hit 24 demerit points then license get suspended. Now 18 points only (within 24 months) and your license is GONER! One or two big traffic mistakes like speeding plus running red light, immediately bye-bye driving privileges!

4. Current Punishment Summary Table
