Wah kakis, pull up a chair, order your kopi-c kosong, and extra kaya toast because this real-life Singapore story has more twists and turns than a Mediacorp 9 PM drama.
Enter Donovan Doran Chung Yi Peng—36 years old with a name so long it could double as a legal contract.
Chapter 1: Midnight BBQ at Eunos (August 2019)
It all began at 1:40 AM at a Eunos carpentry workshop. Donovan had a disagreement with his childhood carpenter friend. Normal adults would settle a tiff over a drink or exchange a few choice Hokkien vulgarities.
Donovan and his 44-year-old buddy, Toh Wei Tiong, decided to go full Michael Bay. They grabbed sealant spray cans and lighters, spraying the victim and lighting him up like a birthday candle.
The victim ran to the toilet to splash water on his pants and collapsed on the floor.
Plot Twist: A third guy who tagged along actually used a cloth to help extinguish the flames, while Donovan just stood there scolding the burning victim before leaving!
The poor carpenter needed skin grafts and three operations for 11% body burns. Meanwhile, Donovan and Toh siam-ed across Woodlands Checkpoint just hours later like GTA players hitting a 4-star wanted level.
Chapter 2: The 5-Year Hide-and-Seek Championship
Bro managed to hide out in Thailand for five whole years while the police issued a gazette for his arrest. But as the old saying goes, heaven’s net is wide, but nothing slips through.
In August 2024, Thai police picked him up for a separate matter, checked his records, and went:
“Eh, SPF looking for this guy leh!”
They packaged him right back to Changi Airport on August 28, 2024. He was charged in court and released on bail.
Chapter 3: When Out on Bail, Add More Drama
Now, if most sane people were granted court bail after evading the law for five years, they would sit at home, drink plain water, and behave like a saint. NOPE.
By August 2025, he started dating a former secondary schoolmate. On September 24, after she returned from a trip to China, his kiasu jealousy flared up. He suspected she was unfaithful and demanded her phone. When she refused:
* He pulled her arm.
* Punched her face multiple times.
* As she lay curled up on the floor, stabbed her thigh with scissors!
The scene was so chaotic his domestic helper had to call his mother like, “Auntie, your boy is losing it again!”
Chapter 4: Dim Sum and Lightsabers
Just when you thought he might calm down, fast-forward to October 12, 2025. The couple went out for a nice late-night dim sum supper—imagine starting a full-blown violent argument while eating siew mai!
The quarrel spilled into his car around midnight, where he:
1. Punched her face again.
2. Brandished a knife.
3. Casually produced a massive 80cm metal rod like he was preparing for a duel in Star Wars!
The poor woman had to plead for her life before he put it down. She ended up with a trail of cuts, abrasions, and stab wounds.
Chapter 5: The Courtroom Plot Twist (August 2026)
Fast-forward to August 14, 2026, and Donovan finally faced the music. He pleaded guilty to three charges of causing hurt, with four other charges (harassment, intimidation, etc.) taken into consideration.
His lawyer pulled out the ultimate Hail Mary mitigation card:
“Your Honour, he changed already! He has a new fiancée now, and they’re expecting a baby in October. He’s super motivated to be a responsible father!”
The judge was not having it and handed him:
* 12 months in jail
* Order to pay $785.35 in compensation to his ex-girlfriend (or serve 2 extra days in jail).
(Fun fact: His buddy Toh who ran away with him got 10 months’ jail earlier in January 2026).
