Grab your kopi O kosong and pull up a plastic stool, because we need to dissect a true masterclass in how not to commit a multi-digit crime.
Picture the scene: Two foreign tourists fly all the way to Singapore with one grand, high-stakes ambition—to liberate a 4.95-carat diamond worth a cool S$200,000 from a jewelry shop along Kreta Ayer Road.
You would think a heist of this magnitude requires James Bond-level gadgets, high-tech hacking, or at least a complex escape route mapped out down to the second.
Instead, their master plan relied entirely on custom-made fake props and sheer human anatomy. Before even stepping foot on our island, these two masterminds actually flew all the way back to India just to manufacture a custom counterfeit diamond matching the exact serial number and specifications of the real deal.
Wah, Hollywood directors must be crying in a corner right now for missing out on such a blockbuster script. Imagine spending all that effort on international logistics just to pull off a roadside magic trick.
Scene 1: The Great Oral Exchange
The dynamic duo waltzes into the jewelry shop looking all blur-cock and innocent. While one partner-in-crime activates distraction mode—making the poor sales manager run around the store showing a million different items and opening endless display trays—our main character, Serasiya, executes the ultimate sleight of mouth.
He smoothly swaps the stones, hides the genuine S$200,000 sparkling diamond safely inside his cheek (talk about keeping your personal liquid assets truly liquid), and leaves the fake rock sitting innocently behind.
With absolute, award-winning deadpan confidence, they look at the shopkeeper, casually say, “Ah, let us think about it first,” and stroll right out the front door like they just window-shopped for keychains.
Think they actually got away with it?
Not so fast!
The literal second they stepped out of the shop, the manager ran an optical gemstone machine over the leftover rock, realized it was tembak (fake), and straight away sounded the alarm.
Did our criminal masterminds go into deep hiding in some ulu industrial corner of Singapore? Of course not. They packed their bags, checked out of their hotel, and rushed straight to Changi Airport Terminal 3 like tourists running late for a flight. They were probably sitting at the boarding gate sipping duty-free espresso in their heads, thinking they had outsmarted the entire island.
Unfortunately for them, the Singapore Police Force doesn’t play amateur hour. Barely hours after the theft, while they were trying to clear immigration, SPF officers tapped them on the shoulder, pulled the real S$200,000 diamond right out of their haversack, and put a very abrupt, unceremonious end to their holiday.
Scene 3: The Mandatory Changi Hotel Staycation
Fast forward to court day, and reality finally hits like a loaded bus. Both master thieves kena-ed a sweet, matching staycation package of over two years in jail.
- The Lesson: Don’t anyhowly swallow luxury items, don’t waste money custom-making fake rocks in another country, and definitely never, ever treat Changi Airport immigration as your safe exit zone after pulling a stunt.
Sip that kopi slow, friends. Let this be a reminder that crime in Singapore comes with a very swift, very unglamorous receipt. Sibei jialat, bro!
