Recently, advocacy group Migrant Workers Singapore (MWS) posted a TikTok and YouTube video that completely shattered the quiet afternoon peace of online Singapore. They dropped a massive reality bomb: while the cost of living in Singapore has rocketed into outer space over the last 40 years, the basic starting salary for many migrant workers has remained stubbornly stuck at around $400 a month since the 1980s.

Aiyoh, $400 in 1984 could buy you a lot of chicken rice, but in 2026? That one is barely enough to cover a few weeks of groceries!

The Math is Not Mathing: Cooking Oil vs. Minister Pay

To make sure everyone understood the gravity of the situation, MWS brought out the comparison receipts:

The Cooking Oil Index: Back in the 80s, a 2kg bottle of cooking oil cost around $3.50. Today, you go NTUC FairPrice and you’ll see the price tag hovering around $7.00. Everything doubled, but basic wages stayed on life support.
The Minister Comparison: They very cheekily brought up entry-level Minister salaries, which sit at around $1.8 million a year after recent reviews.

MWS asked the million-dollar question (quite literally): “How do we decide whose work has value, and who deserves a pay raise?”

Their core argument is that foreign workers build our BTO flats, pave our roads, clean our void decks, and trim our bushes. Remember during the COVID-19 circuit breaker days when grass wasn’t cut for a few weeks, and the dengue cases immediately spiked through the roof? MWS says that proves these workers provide indispensable social value to Singapore, and their pay packet should finally reflect that.

The Proposal: $2,000 Minimum Salary For Everyone!

MWS didn’t just complain; they came with a heavy-duty proposal. They are calling for a $2,000 minimum basic monthly wage for ALL workers in Singapore, regardless of nationality.

Whether you are a local working in logistics, or a migrant brother mixing cement under the burning 34°C sun—$2,000 baseline, no exceptions.

However, the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) has historically maintained a very different stance on this. MOM’s official position is that foreign worker salaries should be driven by free market demand and supply, combined with the worker’s relevant skill set, rather than a government-mandated baseline across the board.
